Something’s Fishy

We all know that eating fish is good for you. Fish is a great source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids. It also promotes cardiovascular health. But, did you know that there are some fish you should NOT eat. Yes, there are some fish you should not eat because they contain high amounts of PCBs, pesticides, dioxins and mercury, all of which are deadly chemicals that can cause serious health problems or death.

Knowing what is okay to eat and what is not okay to eat can be confusing and scary. Here are a few tips that will help.

1. If you buy fish at the grocery store, look for fish with the Safe Seafood label. This label indicates that the fish you are considering buying have been tested for PCBs and Mercury.

2. OceansAlive.org is a web site with resources that you can use to bone-up on the subject of seafood safety (pun intended). Make sure you check out the link on the left that says Seafood Choices. This area gives you a lot of great information on Fish and Seafood safety. There is a downloadable pocket seafood selector and a link to an online list of fish to avoid.

3. If you purchase local fish or catch fish locally (in the U.S.), you can keep up to date on the safety of lakes, rivers and reservoirs in your area by going to the EPA web site listed below. Just click on the link to your sate or territory. http://www.epa.gov/waterscience/fish/states.htm

Making sure that the food your family eats is safe is an important part of your job as a Christian Home Manager. I hope you found these tips and resources helpful.
